How would describe your approach to designing and selecting rugs for a project?
I focus on understanding the space, considering the overall design theme, colour scheme, and textures, but at the same time I always need to bring personal references when creating any object.
Colour plays a crucial role in setting the mood and tying the space together, so I pay attention to the existing colour scheme and aim to complement it. I take into account factors like durability, comfort, and maintenance requirements. Normally I consider natural materials and use wool as my fibre of choice.
What advice would you give designers when sizing rugs?
I tend to like oversized everything and the same goes with rugs.
I enjoy when they dominate the floor space, creating statements without being too overpowering, that is why I use muted colours.
You designed a custom rug to create a vertical screening device in your latest project. What was your inspiration to consider using a flatweave in this way and how would you advise others to do it?
We wanted to add texture and visual interest while maintaining an open and airy feeling to the space. The backing that is normally applied to the rug was left off. This enabled us to drape the rug like a tapestry. The factory sewed loops in at the end of each rug and we put a small rod through the loops to give the rug tension. That made it the ideal choice for this unconventional application
